Step up to Random Width Flooring in your favorite solid wood planks featuring long lengths complemented by wide widths. Longer and wider boards are rapidly becoming the floor of choice because they have the ability to expand the look and feel of a room or home. Once the pattern featured in historic period homes it is now becoming the pattern of choice for homes of all designs, periods or replicas. The character and beauty of the color, grain and grade are released for a lifetime of enjoyment.

A Random Width Floor typically has four distinct sizes and in some instances a few rows of additional sizes mixed in. So a prime example may be something like 8”, 5”, 7” & 6” with some additional planks in say 4” and 9” mixed in.

Situated between Random Width and Fixed Width is what is known as the Alternating Pattern of your favorite solid wood planks featuring long lengths complemented by wide widths. This is sometimes also referred to as a "Repeating Pattern". Longer and wider boards are rapidly becoming the floor of choice because they have the ability to expand the look and feel of a room or home.

An Alternating Width pattern offers a more uniform look and feel without compromising on beauty, warmth and character. It is often the pattern of choice for homeowners that want a varied look with some level of uniformity. Alternating Width patterns are suitable for all homes regardless of period, design or furnishing. An Alternating Width Floor typically has three distinct sizes and may be placed in a sequenced fashion of say 4” 5” & 6” or a spaced manner like 4” 6” & 8”.

Today Fixed Width patterns are truly “Plank Form” starting at 4” and going up the 7” or more and feature long lengths that minimize the number of seams or checkerboard effect of the typical Strip Flooring. As is the case with Random or Alternating Width Patterns, it is the long length that brings the beauty and warmth of each individual plank out.

Many sawmills cut planks to specific sizes – say 5” or 6” which readily mill to 4” and 5” flooring respectively and are reasonably economical compared to the typical Strip Flooring but the image and look and feel is dramatic and thus easily eclipses the nominal value of the Strip Flooring. Going to larger sizes of 6” 7” 8” or even 9” is a common practice today and will transform the room or home to a work of enduring beauty.
