Construction Types

Solid vs. engineered
You can buy wood of two types: solid boards and composite or engineered materials. Solid wood flooring is milled from a single piece of wood, whereas engineered wood consists of three or more layers in a cross-ply construction. All Hampshire Hardwood branded floors are solid wood flooring.

Solid wood flooring is generally installed over - and attached to - a wood subfloor but can also go over concrete - see our installation manual for specific details. Solid wood floors are typically installed on grade or above in primary living areas where the warmth and feel are highly prized in the home. Solid wood flooring comes in a thickness of 3/4-inch or 25/32-inch. These thicknesses provide a firm and strong feeling that is further accented by Hampshire Hardwoods long lengths and wide width planks.

Engineered floors have utility throughout a home, but particularly where moisture may be an issue, such as basements. Engineered floors are typically 5/8-inch or less. In the case of a floating floors, they're more soft or fluid to the feel, in contrast to solid wood floors.

Plank flooring vs. strip flooring
"Plank" and "strip" are naming conventions that differentiate the face width of solid wood flooring.

3/4-inch-thick strip flooring typically comes in face widths of 2-1/4 or 3-1/4 inches.

3/4-inch-thick plank flooring typically comes in face widths of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 inches.

Strip and planks are equally uniform in strength, durability and reliability. The difference occurs in the number of seams - both vertically and horizontally. Strip flooring normally has more "shorts" - pieces that range from 12 - 18 inches long. Hampshire Hardwoods provides lengths beginning at 2 feet and averages 6 feet or more resulting in a floor that has long, elegant, graceful lines. Many individual boards will be 12 to 14 feet long.
