Maintenance & prevention

Wood floors are a lifetime investment and, when properly cared for, will last the life of the structure. Most maintenance centers around avoiding scratches and moisture. Gone are the days of the paste wax and buffing machines!

As with anything associated with solid wood flooring, setting end-user expectations is the single biggest step towards customer satisfaction. The environment still needs to be maintained, but the end-user needs to know what to do and what not to do.
  • Place throw rugs down at all points of entry inside and out to remove grit, wetness and general debris from the bottoms of shoes. Check to see how long the finish needs to cure before placing any rugs.
  • Rugs will create coloration variations due to exposure to light, so you may want to expose the floor for some time before putting down rugs, and use different entrances.
  • Rugs should be shaken and dried regularly.
  • Place floor protector pads on the bottom of all furniture legs.
  • Pick up furniture to move it - don't slide it.
  • Control humidity either within the heating/ventilation/air-conditioning system or with stand-alone units.
  • Sweep and vacuum regularly - make sure the vacuum has a hard floor attachment.
  • Follow the manufacturer's directions if the wood floor is pre-finished, and the finishing product instructions if the floor is site-finished.
  • Be aware of the impact some shoes will have, especially high heels. Uncapped heels will dent any floor.
  • Trim animals claws regularly.
  • Wipe up moisture droppings immediately with a moist cloth first and then a dry one. If the manufacturer recommends applying a cleaning agent on spills, do so.
  • Never use a wax finish on top of a surface finish.
  • Never wet mop a solid wood floor, regardless of finish.
